As ‘thanks’ being named the most valuable word in English language by George Bernard Shaw, ‘Thaimai’ (motherhood), ‘Mudiyum’ (possible) and ‘Panpaadu’ (culture) have been selected as the three valuable words in Tamil by medical students here.
Shaw had received 1,000 pounds as prize money for writing the word ‘thanks’ during a competition organised by an Institution in United Kingdom, wherein people were asked to name the most valuable word in English language, years back.
Corollary to this, the students were asked to write the most valuable word in Tamil language, at the Students Club Meeting of Coimbatore Medical College last week.
More than 150 responded instantly and the jury — Dr Indira Pranesh, Dr Rani and Dr Pushpavalli — selected three striking responses of ‘Thaimai, Mudiyum and Panpaadu’, the expressions of which were gentle and elegant, Dr R Vijayaraghavan, Prof of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, who also participated in the meeting, said.
Vijayaraghavan had addressed the students on ‘Creative inroads in Tamil literature and its application to medical profession’ at the meeting. (Agencies)
