Nearly 15,000 lorries from Coimbatore district would join the proposed nation-wide indefinite stir called by All India Motor Congress on January 20,demanding reduction of third party insurance premium.
About rs.10 crore to rs.15 crore worth business per day was likely to be affected due to the strike, sources in the Coimbatore Lorry Owners Association, said.
Transporation of vegetable, poultry products, chicken and egg, cattle, milk products, particularly to neighbouring Kerala and textile goods like readymade garments, yarn and fabric to various parts of the Country, would also be seriously hit, they said.
The sources claimed that not even one per cent of the total trucks and lorries in the Country was getting involved in accidents, necessitating payment under third party insurance scheme.Considering this, the Centre should take immediate steps to reduce the premium,by which there would not be any loss to the Insurance companies.
