We all know that Coimbatore has abundant mechanical engineering plants right from long timers like LMB to the newcomer Bosch Industries. Now, one another International Manufacturer has chosen Coimbatore as their manufacturing base. Belgium-based Hansen Transmissions International NV announced an investment plan of euro 170 million for a production plant for gearboxes for wind turbines in the megawatt range to supply to Indian and international markets. The plant will start operating by the end of 2008 and will be in full production status by 2010. The plant itself will employ 600 skilled people and will have all the modern manufacturing equipments. As with all other manufacturing units, this will increase the demand on the parts and ancillary units near Coimbatore and so the actual impact on the economy will be much more than projected on this single enterprise.
It is great to see that there are growth in other industries as well in addition to IT in coimbatore and the long way the industrial climate has come from the late 90s slump.
