New curriculum for engineering education

Encouraging self-learning and a change in the evaluation system would be some salient features of the new curriculum that is being implemented in engineering education by the AICTE, its Chairman Damodar Acharya said on Monday.

Addressing the graduation day of a private engineering college here, Acharya said the curriculum has been approved by the ministry and the AICTE would shortly implement the change.

Besides encouraging every day self-learning, the new curriculum would allow development of strong communication skills, enhance research activities and change in evaluation system, Acharya said.

As the focus of education is now shifting from external examinations to every day learning, it would keep the teachers on their toes, he pointed out.

Every day learning would be equivalent to examination and the students would be allowed to take elective, for which credit would be given, Acharya said.
